A person has died on a railway line near Wigan

A person has died on a railway line near Wigan.

British Transport Police (BTP) officers were called to a casualty on train tracks between Wigan and Preston at around 3.45pm on Wednesday.

Paramedics also attended, but the person sadly died at the scene.

Officers are in the process of identifying the person and informing their next of kin.

It is not known whether the person was a man or a woman.

Their death is not being treated as suspicious.

A BTP spokesperson said: "Officers were called to the lines close to Wigan at 3.46pm today (15/05) following reports of a casualty on the track.

"Paramedics are also on scene however sadly a person has been pronounced dead.

"Officers are currently working to identify the person and inform their family.

"The incident is not currently being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

A statement on Northern's Twitter account said services between Wigan and Preston had been cancelled or delayed by up to an hour.

The statement said: "Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Wigan North Western and Preston some lines will be blocked."
