A person has died after being hit by a train in Wigan

A person has died after being hit by a train in Wigan.

Emergency services were called to Wigan North Western station just before midday on Friday to reports of a casualty on the tracks.

Ambulance crews also attended, but the person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Train services were temporarily suspended, however the lines have since reopened.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "BTP officers were called to Wigan North Western station at 11.48am on Friday, June 28, after a report of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended and sadly a person has since been pronounced dead.

"Officers are currently working to identify the person and notify their next of kin.

"Enquiries into how the person came to be at the location are ongoing."

Disruption to Virgin Train services between Preston and Wigan North Western is expected until around 7pm.

According to National Rail, some services may be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes.
