A person has died after being hit by a train at Cheadle Hulme station in Stockport

A person has died after being hit by a train at Cheadle Hulme station in Stockport.

Emergency services were called to the Station Road stop just before 10am on Thursday (January 30).

Paramedics treated the person, but a spokesman for British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed they sadly died.

The BTP spokesman said: "We were called at 9.55am to reports of a casualty on the tracks at Cheadle Hulme.

"A person has since died.

"We are working to establish their identity and inform their family at this stage."

No further details have been released.

Train services on Transport for Wales, Northern, Avanti West Coast and CrossCountry travelling through the station have been suspended.

It is affecting trains on routes between Manchester Piccadilly and Wilmslow, Stockport and Stoke-on-Trent - as well as between Stockport and Stafford.

Some train services may be diverted through Styal.

Passengers are being advised they can use their tickets on alternative services.
