A pensioner is fighting for his life following a hit-and-run in Rochdale

A pensioner is fighting for his life in hospital following a hit-and-run.

The 83-year-old pedestrian was knocked down by a silver Mini Clubman in Rochdale yesterday afternoon.

Following the crash, which took place at about 3pm at the junction of Broadhalgh Road and Bury Road in Bamford, police say the driver left the scene.

The pensioner was treated at the roadside by paramedics then taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

A 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop following a collision and dangerous driving. He has been released under investigation.

Enquiries remain ongoing and police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to get in touch.

Pc Peter Cunningham, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We are working hard to piece together the circumstances surrounding this collision as an elderly man has been left in a critical condition in hospital.

“We have specially trained officers supporting the man’s family and our thoughts remain with them as he receives treatment.
