A Peaky Blinders movie was always the plan, says creator – as TV series set to come to end

A Peaky Blinders movie was always the plan, according to the show's creator – with the TV series set for the end.

Creator and writer Steven Knight confirmed the BBC One show will conclude after its upcoming sixth series.

And following hints of a movie following shortly after the final season airs, Knight confirmed the news on Tuesday, much to fans' delight.

“Covid changed our plans. But I can say that my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a movie.

“That is what is going to happen,” he told US site Deadline.

Deadline says it understands that "nothing has been formalized" when it comes to the film, adding that Knight has also been approached about a West End musical adaptation and a ballet spin-off.

Knight had previously expressed interest in wrapping the drama’s TV run with a seventh season, but it seems the pandemic threw a spanner into the works.

After facing delays due to Covid 19, the hit Birmingham based show starring Irish actor Cillian Murphy as mob boss Thomas Shelby returned to production to film the sixth and final series.

Teasing fans of an announcement on Monday, with a behind the scenes photo, the show tweeted: “We’re calling a family meeting..”

“The Shelbys are back in business.

“Series 6 of Peaky Blinders has begun filming.”

But the news proved bittersweet for fans, as creator and writer Steven Knight went on to confirm that the series will mark the end of the Peaky Blinders story forever on TV.

He said: “Peaky is back and with a bang.

“After the enforced production delay due to the Covid pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher.

“We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it.”

Teasing a future movie, he added: “While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form.”

“Thank you to all the Peaky fans.”

The sixth series is written by Knight, while Anthony Byrne returns as director having directed series five to great acclaim. Nick Goding will produce.

Executive producers are Caryn Mandabach, Steven Knight, Jamie Glazebrook, David Mason, Anthony Byrne and Cillian Murphy.

Tommy Bulfin is executive producer for the BBC and Lucy Bedford is executive producer for Tiger Aspect.
