A new woodland is intended for Swansea's Singleton Park

A new woodland could be planted within one of Swansea's most popular public parks.

The trees are proposed for Singleton Park as part of a strategy to increase woodland cover across the city.

It would help remove carbon from the atmosphere, improve air quality, and create new habitat for wildlife including bees, butterflies, birds and small mammals.

Planted trees would be 100% native broad-leaved species suited to the site, with planting planned for the winter of 2020/21.

Singleton Park has acres of simple, unadorned green space featuring botanical gardens, a lake, a children's play area, pedalos and crazy golf.

It was originally part of the Singleton Estate, which had amalgamated some 12 farms to amass 250 acres. By 1851 the walled garden had become the kitchen and flower garden to serve the needs of the Vivian family.

The County Borough Council bought the Singleton Estate in 1919 for use as a public park.

Daniel Bliss, who was trained at Kew Gardens, was the driving force behind the purchase, and began in early 1920 to oversee its transformation. The layout of the gardens has much to do with his vision and plans.

The woodland scheme, led by Coed Cymru and Swansea Council is part of Natural Resources Wales' Glastir Woodland Creation scheme.

A consultation is currently ongoing, with people encouraged to get in contact with Elen Richards of Coed Cymru and any comments or queries by October 28.

Councillor David Helliwell said he approved of the plans.

"I would welcome any planting of trees, it is good for the environment and good for calming people," he said.

"I think it will make the park even better than it is already. It is Swansea's premier park."
