A new testing facility has opened in Maindee car park, Newport this week

A new coronavirus testing centre has opened in Newport this week, with anyone feeling unwell being urged to make an appointment.

The new temporary unit in Maindee car park brings the total number of testing sites in Newport up to seven.

The other sites across the city are located in Malpas Court, Duffryn, Bettws, Pillgwenlly and the two sites in Rodney Parade.

It comes as Newport's rolling seven-day average number of cases, adjusted for population, has fallen to 8.4 per 100,000 people.

Across the Aneurin Bevan health board area, the number of beds in hospitals being taken up by cases of Covid-19 has dropped by around 81% since March.

On June 3, 26 general and acute beds in Gwent Hospitals were occupied by confirmed, suspected or recovering cases of the virus. On March 1, that number stood at 138.

On Monday, First Minister Mark Drakeford gave updates on what measures would be lifted as Wales entered alert level 1.

As of June 7, people will be able to meet in larger groups and rules around indoor contact will be eased.

The changes mean that concerts, football matches with spectators and sporting activities outdoors can once again resume and larger outdoor weddings will be allowed.

In April, it was also announced that free lateral flow tests would be available to anyone who could not work from home.

You can find out more about how to book a coronavirus test on the health board's website.
