A new play centre cafe has opened in Stretford - every family gets its own themed 'pod'

A new pop-up play centre has opened at Stretford Mall, with each family given its own themed 'pod'.

Families will be able to book one of the eight pods - each one decorated and filled with toys and activities - for two hours at a time.

The Play Cafe will also be serving food from Stretford Canteen, including pies, cheese platters, fresh bread and cakes, and picnic platters for children.

Also on offer will be beers, wines and gin and tonics - as well as hot drinks, with a focus on using local suppliers.

The cafe has taken over two units in Kingsway Mall and divided it into the themed play pods.

The pods available cover everything from messy play and role play to classic games and Lego.

There's also a nature pod, small world, babe in arms and active pod.

Each one is free to hire but requires a £10 deposit, which will be deducted from the food bill.

The Play Cafe concept comes from local community entrepreneur Haylea Osborne, the woman behind Placemaker Events.

Haylea said: "The Play Cafe is a concept that we have evolved and adapted numerous times to meet the requirements of the current climate.

"Our aim has always been to provide affordable family fun in an environment that is both inspiring to adults and children.

"We are proud to deliver something that is local to the Stretford area and are grateful to Bruntwood Works for their support in helping us trial something different.

"Like many people COVID-19 has affected me personally and it hasn’t been easy to keep going when myself and my business partner are working full time...I hope us finally opening our doors will be an inspiration to others.

"We think it essential that we work with local suppliers such as Stretford Canteen, The Urban Preserver, Mancoco and Dunky spoons hot choc - keeping our business local is the least we can do to support the local economy.

"We look forward to welcoming the families of Stretford along for some good old fashioned fun!"

The Play Cafe is taking bookings every Saturday, with a 30 minute gap between slots to allow for cleaning.

Pods can be booked in two-hour slots at 11am, 1.30pm, and 4pm.
