Nintendo has confirmed, via the Nintendo Today app, that it will broadcast a Nintendo Direct on Sept. 12. It is expected to reveal news on Switch 2 and Switch games, all set for release over the next few months.
Currently, there are no details available on the length of the broadcast or its particular focus, but the date actually lines up neatly with one significant anniversary: the leading man, Mario himself.
Sept. 13, 1985, marks the release of the original Mario Bros. in Japan, and as such has been celebrated as the mustachioed plumber's birthday ever since. Notably, this year will be Mario's 40th anniversary, and Nintendo is rarely one to shy away from big celebrations for the plumber.
For Mario's 35th anniversary in 2020, Nintendo held a special Mario Direct and also released Super Mario 3D All-Stars, a compilation featuring several Mario games. It's certainly possible that a new compilation (perhaps of 2D platformers from the DS entries and above), or even a new 3D Mario, could be revealed. One very likely reveal is a trailer for the upcoming sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Illumination.
This is the first time that Nintendo has revealed something as big as a new Nintendo Direct on its smartphone app. Usually, these announcements are posted simultaneously everywhere, but Nintendo has been focusing on revealing new details and announcements daily on the app in recent months, potentially signaling a move away from social media as the team looks to grow its own platform, keeping everything in-house.
Elsewhere, there are several upcoming Switch 2 titles like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment that do not have set dates. These games will likely get official release dates, alongside some surprise game announcements.
