A new Matlida movie is set to be released on Netflix

Roald Dahl's Matilda is a firm favourite for book lovers everywhere.

And now a new film based on the classic novel is reportedly coming to Netflix.

According to the The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures is adapting the popular stage production Matilda the Musical into a new cinematic version.

It's thought the film will be released in cinemas throughout the UK before going on to be streamed on Netflix worldwide, reports The Mirror.

The Roald Dahl book was the basis for the 1996 film starring Mara Wilson, a young bookworm who was mistreated by her parents and later finds out she has telekinetic powers.

This leads her to take on her ruthless head teacher Agatha Trunchbull and befriend her teacher, Miss Honey.

The stage version hit the West End in 2011 and Broadway in 2013, achieving widespread acclaim and box-office success, followed by seven Olivier Award wins.

Details surrounding the release, including cast members and an air date, is not yet known.

However, it's not the only project based on the works of Roald Dahl the streaming giant apparently has planned.

In 2018, Netflix revealed they would be adapting a number of the author's work into animated series.

The vice president of kids and family content at Netflix, Melissa Cobb, said in a statement at the time: "Immersing ourselves in the extraordinary worlds of Roald Dahl stories has been an honour and a massive amount of fun, and we are grateful for the trust the Roald Dahl Story Company and the Dahl family have placed in our team to deliver more moments of shared joy to families around the world.

"We have great creative ambition to re-imagine the journeys of so many treasured Dahl characters in fresh, contemporary ways with the highest quality animation and production values."
