A new flexi bus service is to start running in Blaenau Gwent next month

A flexible bus service is set to begin in Blaenau Gwent next month.

Two Fflecsi vehicles, operated by Transport For Wales, will replace the Stagecoach E2 and E4 service on June 14.

The service will be available to be booked over the phone, through the app, or by visiting the website, and can be paid for while on the bus.

The Fflecsi busses will begin operating in two zones that will enable Blaenau Gwent residents to reach Rassau Industrial Estate and Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan, neither of which are currently served by public transport.

It will also offer a connection to the last train arriving at Ebbw Vale railway station, as well as a further connection to the strategic X4 bus route for links to Nevill Hall Hospital, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil & Abergavenny.

Transport for Wales said this booking system will ensure that all passengers have a seat while on the bus, as well as helping maintain physical distancing measures on board.

It follows the role out of the service in other parts of Wales such as Newport, Rhondda, and Pembrokeshire this month.

Transport for Wales CEO James Price said he is very excited to continue with the trial, which he thinks could transform public transport right across the country.

He said: "Fflecsi is a very exciting trial for us as we continue to transform public transport in Wales.

"The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has had a direct impact on public transport and as we move forward the safety of our colleagues and customers continues to be our top priority.

"This offers us the opportunity to look at a new way of operating public transport, and we are now running fflecsi pilots throughout Wales and it’s great to see it expanded to Blaenau Gwent.”

Councillor Dai Davies said he was also very happy to see that the project was about to launch in the borough.

He said: "We’re delighted to be working with Transport for Wales on the new Fflecsi service here in Blaenau Gwent. As we emerge from Covid 19 restrictions and see an increased demand for public transport, Fflecsi will offer peace of mind for passengers.

"The buses are brand new and the service will allow residents to get out and about, with direct links to Rassau Industrial Estate, local shops, and Aneurin Bevan Hospital in a more convenient way."
