A new Christmas market is opening at Salford Quays

A new independent Christmas market is popping up at Salford Quays this weekend.

The colourful sheds that were built at MediaCityUK in the summer will be opened up again as miniature shops.

Box on the Docks Unwrapped will allow the local artists who have been part of the public art display to sell their original products.

There'll be paintings, jewellery, ceramics and even wrapping paper for sale, all designed by local independent artists.

The small market will be open this weekend, with the artists on hand to greet shoppers.

The event will run alongside the regular Maker's Market, where local traders sell everything from plants to pies.

As well as the sheds being used as a marketplace, some will host interactive art works.

One will be filled with digital fairies hiding within a woodland mural by local creative team Reform, while another will be used for the storytelling project A Grand Life, Heard, where some of Greater Manchester's most inspiring older residents tell their tales.

Manchester Street Poem have collaborated with Underworld musicians Karl Hyde and Rick Smith on Winter Trees, which celebrates positivity and caring.

The gardens and piazza at MediaCityUK have been transformed into a twinkling winter wonderland.

Salford Foodbank also has its own shed - the 'Giftbox' will be open to receive items including coffee, rice, pasta and jarred sauces to support local families.

One of the Box on the Docks sheds has been inspired by L. S. Lowry and will be selling paintings and photography by Daniel Waggett.

From the 'World's Smallest Disco' box, printed wrapping paper by Lois Gilbert will be on sale, while local creative duo Jive Prints will sell printed goods.

Josie Cahill, director of place for MediaCityUK said: "Box on the Docks: Unwrapped continues to support local artists and works well alongside the Makers’ Market where people can safely browse, soak up the festive atmosphere as well as support local and independent traders.

"So, wrap up warm, and head down to MediaCity this weekend to enjoy street food at the Makers’ Market, meet talented artists and admire the Christmas lights."

Box on the Docks: Unwrapped will operate with a strict capacity and will run from 10am until 5pm on Saturday December 12 and Sunday December 13.
