A new £5 coin has been released - but you can't spend it

The Royal Mint has revealed their latest set of collectable coins, including a stunning new £5 coin .

The set has been issued to celebrate 200 years since the birth of Queen Victoria, and will be an avid collector's dream.

But the commemorative coins aren’t going to be entering general circulation, so don’t expect to see them popping up in your change any time soon.

Instead you can only get them directly from the Royal Mint’s website - where the cheapest option is the £5 denomination coin, which ironically costs £13.

Peter Rabbit 50p coin rumoured for release - and it's set to be worth more than £650

If your budget is particularly impressive, you can get a £1,000 denomination coin - measuring 10cm in diameter and made of a kilo of gold - which will set you back a casual £49,995 .

It features a double portrait of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert designed by William Wyon. The Royal Mint said the design showed the couple “at their peak and exemplifies the optimism and drive of the age.”

The £5 Queen Victoria coin has been designed by artist John Bergdahl. John’s design showcases his interpretation of a “young head” portrait of Queen Victoria, surrounded by inventions and innovations from her era on the throne - including the telephone.

May 24 will mark the 200th anniversary of her birth, and 18 years later she took the throne for more than six decades.

Due to the length of her reign, the coinage issued in her name was prolific and used by 25% of the world - according to the Royal Mint .

Nicola Howell, director of the consumer division at the Royal Mint, said: “Queen Victoria is one of Britain’s most iconic monarchs, so it’s fantastic to be celebrating 200 years since her birth.”
