A mum came home to find her baby boy unconscious - his dad shook him to death

A man has admitting killing his four-month-old son by 'rigorously and violently' shaking him.

Sam Gildea, 30, admitted the manslaughter of Alfie Gildea on Wednesday afternoon, on the day a proposed murder trial was due to start.

The incident was described as an act of 'deliberate and unlawful violence'.

Gildea appeared visibly emotional as he changed his plea, saying: "Not guilty to murder, but guilty to manslaughter."

He also admitted a charge of controlling or coercive behaviour from July 2017 to September last year; the victim being Alfie's mum.

Gildea was due to stand trial at Minshull Street Crown Court accused of murder.

However, after discussions between prosecution and defence counsel, his barrister, Guy Gozem QC asked Gildea to be re-arraigned.

Prosecutor Andrew Thomas QC said the plea had been tendered on the basis that the defendant admitted caused Alfie's death, with an 'act of deliberate and unlawful violence which involved rigorous and violent shaking'.

The judge, Mr Justice Dove, adjourned sentencing.

The sentencing hearing is not expected to take before Friday at the earliest, as the issue of whether Gildea is a 'dangerous' offender is assessed.

Gildea had a history of involvement with mental health services, the court heard.

The case will next be heard on Thursday afternoon, when a date for sentencing will be decided upon.

Gildea, of Woodruff Walk, Partington, was remanded in custody.
