A moor fire has broken out on the hills near Glossop

A moor fire has broken out on the hills near Glossop tonight (Saturday).

Firefighters are battling a sizeable blaze close to Woodhead reservoir.

Pictures from the scene show a wall of flames on the moors overlooking the water.

A spokeswoman for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze was reported at 7pm.

Ten firefighters were sent to the scene and the gamekeeper has been made aware of the incident.

At this stage it's not clear how the fire started.

Just before 9pm the spokeswoman said the fire was 'dying down'.

The blaze comes despite last month being the wettest February on record.

Last April a huge fire at Marsden Moor near Saddleworth, thought to have been started by a discarded barbecue, destroyed about 6sq miles of moorland.
