The latest Hollywood release A Minecraft Movie, has struck box office gold with its opening weekend in North America that exceeded all expectations.
The film debuted with a staggering $157 million in ticket sales from US and Canadian cinemas alone, making it the biggest opening of 2025 so far, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.
Globally, it collected an additional $144 million, bringing its total worldwide debut to an impressive $301 million and making it the highest-grossing video game-adapted film, even surpassing the $146 million opening of the 2023 film 'Super Mario Bros. Movie'. Analysts had projected an opening weekend in the range of $80 million, but A Minecraft Movie nearly doubled those estimates, setting a new benchmark for video game adaptations. With school spring breaks ongoing across the U.S., the film is expected to continue its strong performance in the coming weeks.
Directed by Jared Hess, the PG-rated family adventure stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa, alongside Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. The film follows a group of characters transported into the game’s iconic Overworld, where they must embark on a wildly imaginative—and hilariously dangerous—journey to find their way home.
Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, A Minecraft Movie landed a solid B+ CinemaScore and a 4/5 star audience rating on PostTrak exit polls. The film had an expansive release strategy, launching it in 4,263 locations across North America and 36,000 screens worldwide.
The film’s estimated production budget was $150 million, not including marketing costs.
Meanwhile, A Working Man, an action thriller starring Jason Statham, took second place at the domestic box office with a modest $7.3 million. In third was The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 2, the latest chapter in the popular faith-based series, which earned $6.7 million.
Disney’s Snow White continued to struggle, finishing fourth with $6.1 million. With just $77.4 million in domestic earnings after three weeks and $90 million from overseas markets, the $250 million production is shaping up to be one of the year’s biggest disappointments.
Rounding out the top five was Universal’s horror-thriller The Woman in the Yard, starring Danielle Deadwyler, with $4.5 million.
After a lacklustre start to the year for Hollywood, which saw underwhelming returns for big-budget releases like Snow White and Mickey 17, A Minecraft Movie has delivered a much-needed boost for cinemas as the industry looks ahead to the summer blockbuster season.
