A Midsummer Night's Tree

Make no mistake - this open air show has everything to do with setting and very little to do with content. It's filed under Theatre in the Fringe programme, but don't for a moment be misled into thinking it might have something to do with Shakespeare. It is merely an opportunity for some of the La Clique crowd to see daylight and get a bit of fresh air. Essentially, this is a cabaret-style show with some pretty good acts, including marvellous balancing and phenomenal break-dancing, interspersed with some crooning. There's a vague stab at a storyline - a young man goes out into the great wide world in search of love - but nobody bothers about it very much. They concentrate instead on what they do best: circus skills. A girl falls from the sky on scarlet sheets, an engaging young man juggles eggs, and there's an amusing male belly-dancing act.

To be honest, if you saw this indoors you might be a wee bit sniffy, but played as dusk bruises the sky underneath the spreading branches of an ancient tree, it starts to become somewhat more than it really is. At the end, you stand up to leave and discover that a great moon has risen in the sky and the gardens behind you are twinkling with light and fire. It is quite magical. The show also fulfils that essential festival requirement of taking you to parts of the city where you otherwise might never venture.

So choose a warm night, think of it as an event rather than theatre, go early and take a picnic and a bottle of wine, and you will experience something that will indeed stay with you like a dream half-remembered. It may not be art, but it is very artfully stage-managed.

· Until August 27. Box office: 0131-226 0000.
