British choreographer Liam Scarlett has taken on Shakespeare’s witty masterpiece and given it new life in a co-production between the Queensland Ballet and the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
Scarlett wanted to remain faithful to the original text, but also to “show it in a fresh and vibrant re-working, bubbling with all the delight and humour that the wonderful array of characters conjure up through their own intertwining stories,” he says.
Music director Nigel Gaynor has complemented Mendelssohn’s original score, which form the ballet’s overture and incidental music, with new works created for Scarlett’s story. With costumes and set designed by Tracy Grant Lord, and lighting by Kendall Smith, the ballet will see Shakespeare’s young Athenians and woodland fairies brought to life.
