A massive ‘Free Dai Morris’ mural has appeared at St Helen’s Recreation Ground in Swansea

A massive mural calling for the freedom of a man convicted for multiple murder has appeared on a wall in Swansea.

The brightly coloured painting alongside St Helen’s recreational ground states simply ‘Free Dai Morris’.

It is the latest move by campaigners calling for the release of Dai Morris, 58, who is currently serving four life sentences.

Morris was sentenced in 2002 and then in 2006 following a re-trial, for the brutal murder of Mandy Power, 34, her daughters Katie, 10, and Emily, eight, and their disabled 80-year-old grandmother Doris Dawson, at their home in Kelvin Road, Clydach .

Morris has always protested his innocence, but failed in his attempts to get the verdicts overturned.

The mural is clearly visible to drivers using the busy Mumbles Road.

In addition to its main message, it is supplemented by smaller slogans including ‘Wrongfully arrested’, ‘Enough’s enough’, ‘20 years in prison’, ‘set up’, ‘SWP corrupt force’ and ‘ACAB’ - an acronym for ‘all coppers are b*******’.

It follows a series of posters posted around Swansea over recent months, calling for Morris’ release, and a concerted effort to highlight his case, backed by a social media campaign group with more than 15,000 members.

Last week, posters were discovered on bus stops around Clydach, and in Morriston , with the same three-word message.

The controversial move divided people living in the village, with those who questioned Morris’ conviction, and others concerned the posters might upset people.

In October, ‘Free Dai Morris’ graffiti first appeared on walls around the city centre , and in December campaigners staged a protest in Swansea city centre , carrying green and yellow balloons and ribbons and handing out leaflets while chanting - ‘Free Dai Morris’.

A spokesman for the campaign said: “There are going to be a lot more posters put up over the next few weeks. A lot more places are going to be hit throughout South Wales. It shows the level of support”.
