A Manchester coffee shop is selling mugs of IKEA-style meatballs - with pots of dipping gravy

A city centre cafe that had to launch during strict lockdown has finally been able to open its doors properly - and it's serving mugs of meatballs.

Lattsam is a coffee shop and beer cafe inspired by Scandinavian culture and cuisine, which includes a nod to the Swedish delicacy that put IKEA's cafes on the map.

Although the venue launched last December, Greater Manchester was quickly plunged into a months-long lockdown.

The business decided to close for the foreseeable future on January 4, citing an 'expected drop in footfall and continued unpredictability of the situation'.

But it finally opened its doors properly on July 5, and the kitchen has been able to get up and running this week.

Lattsam loosely translates from Swedish as 'easygoing', or 'lighthearted', and the site is intended to be a casual spot for people to work with a laptop, grab a pint after work, or enjoy a healthy laid-back lunch.

The Swedish meatballs are the star of the show, priced at £4 per mug with a vegan option available, and served with optional gravy and red berry jam.

They're also available served inside a brioche bun.

The menu also includes a traditional prawn skagen - a classic Scandinavian dish of creamy, tangy prawns on toast - and all-day breakfasts featuring those signature meatballs again.

As the cafe is owned by a brewery, there's plenty of beer to choose from too, from across Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland.

Permanent beers include Mikkeller and Warpigs, though other guest beers will be served on a rotation.

Lattsam is open now at 22 Spring Gardens, with the menu on a soft launch until Friday.
