Police were called to a Central Coast home in the early hours of Christmas morning, Wednesday, after neighbours reported hearing a gunshot.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Mountain View Drive at Woongarrah around 3.30am where they found a 33 year-old man had suffered a gunshot wound to his right hip.
Paramedics from NSW Ambulance treated the man at the scene before he was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.
Officers have been told the man was asleep in his home when he was woken by two intruders who then shot him before running from the house.
A crime scene has been established and inquiries are now underway by detectives from Tuggerah Lakes Police District.
The men have been described only as having worn dark clothing.
Police have appealed to the public for anyone who may be able to assist in identifying the intruders, or who may have information about the incident, to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000, or to use their online reporting page.
Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident on the state's Mid North Coast, a 44 year-old man reported missing on Christmas Eve was found safe and well around 6.30am on Wednesday morning.
Police said the man was located after he became lost in bushland near Fisherman's Reach.
Officers have thanked the local community for their assistance during the search.
