A man has died in police custody after being arrested in Stockport

A man has died in custody after being arrested in Stockport .

The 57-year-old became unwell at Cheadle Heath Police Station and was taken to hospital, where he sadly died.

Police were called to a disturbance on Argyll Road, in Cheadle, at 4.30am on on Sunday, May 12.

They arrested the man and took him to the police station, but shortly after his arrival, he became ill.

He sadly died in hospital at 6.50am.

A referral was made by the GMP Professional Standards Branch to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

An  independent investigation has now been launched.

Greater Manchester Police Chief Superintendent Wayne Miller said: “Earlier this morning we received a report of a disturbance at a property in Stockport.

“Local officers swiftly responded to the incident and arrested a man.

“On arrival at Cheadle Police Station, the man became unwell and he was taken to hospital but he was sadly pronounced dead. Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this devastating time.

“We have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct who are independently investigating and we will continue to co-operate with them fully.”
