A man who was shot by police during a dramatic pursuit on the Central Coast on Wednesday has died in hospital.

Officers attached to the Tuggerah Lakes Proactive Crime Team were engaged in a pursuit with a Mitsubishi Lancer around 10.20am Wednesday when the Lancer rammed a police vehicle, officers said.

The pursuit was terminated before the vehicle was spotted again on Tuggerah Parade. Police said they then spotted a man and woman run from the vehicle and "officers noticed the man was in possession of two firearms - a long arm and a pistol".

A foot pursuit continued towards Gosford Avenue before a confrontation.

"Initial reports suggest shots were fired by the man and a police officer, which left the man with a wound to his neck," NSW Police said in a statement.

Paramedics treated the 30-year-old man before flying him to the John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition. He died just before 1pm on Thursday, police said.

Two firearms were secured following the pursuit and have been seized for forensic and ballistic examination.

A short time later, a 43-year-old woman was arrested on Broonarra Street and taken to Wyong Police Station. She was charged with possess prohibited drug and breach of bail. She was refused bail and appeared at Wyong Local Court on Wednesday.

Detectives from the Homicide Squad will now lead the critical incident investigation into the incident, which marked the second police shooting within the week.

Northern Region police commander Assistant Commissioner Max Mitchell

said two shots were fired - but who fired and when "needs to be investigated thoroughly".

"He was challenged by police on a number of occasions," he said, adding that the incident and the lead-up was captured on body-worn video.

"There was good communication at all times with this individual and at a point in time, when challenged, there were two gunshots.

"[Body-worn video] shows in particular the individual ... being given instructions, called upon by police - by his first name - to lay down the arms and stop."

A critical incident team from the Homicide Squad are investigating all circumstances surrounding the incident, and that investigation will also be subject to independent review, police said.
