A man has been catching the tram in a full hazmat suit and mask

A tram passenger has been riding the Metrolink in a full hazmat suit and mask to avoid catching coronavirus.

The man was pictured in his bright yellow safety gear travelling from Piccadilly Gardens to south Manchester.

Ernst ter Horst, from Stretford, was on the Metrolink on his way home from work on Tuesday when he spotted the cautious tram passenger.

He said: "Our friend was sat right next to the door.

"Everyone else was ignoring the elephant in the room, so I asked him if he had the coronavirus.

"He simply shook his head. So I asked him if he was looking to avoid getting the virus and he nodded.

"The tram got much busier with perplexed passengers in numbers."

Some passengers seemed oblivious to the unusual outfit.

Photos taken by Mr ter Horst showed the man surrounded by commuters staring at their phones.

The bright yellow hazmat suit became a popular costume choice following crime drama television series Breaking Bad.

In the series, protagonist Walter White wore the bright yellow protective suit when manufacturing crystal meth.
