Watch the dramatic arrest after two pursuits and a collision with a police vehicle

A 32 year-old man has been arrested on the University of Newcastle campus at Callaghan after being involved in a crash with a police vehicle following two pursuits.

Officers from the Port Stephens Hunter Police District attempted to stop a Toyota Camry, which was travelling through Beresfield about 12pm on Tuesday, in relation of a fraud matter.

Police began a pursuit after the vehicle failed to stop, a NSW Police spokesperson said.

The chase was called off a short time later because of safety concerns.

Police said the vehicle was spotted again some time later in Beresfield and officer started a second pursuit. But it was called off because of safety concerns.

Police said the vehicle travelled through several Newcastle suburbs including Wallsend and Jesmond before it was involved in a minor collision with a police vehicle at the Callaghan campus about 2pm.

Dramatic video of the arrest appears to show officers with weapons drawn before the man is tackled to the ground by one officer before several others arrive to assist.

The man was taken to Waratah Police Station, where police say inquiries are continuing.
