While we’re still three years away from the next Olympic Games, the schedule for the 2028 sports shebang has been released, and there’s a huge reshuffle in the mix. A reshuffle so unique, it could mess with Australia’s cheeky boost in the medal tally.
On Tuesday, the official schedule for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA2028) was dropped, highlighting that sporting festivities officially kick off Friday, July 14 2028 (Saturday, July 15, 1pm AEST).
However, in its major reveal, it appears that LA2028 will feature a historic shift in its sporting schedule. Per its announcement, LA28 is said to have “an entirely different flavour” than other Olympic Games, such as Paris 2024.
This time around, the sporting extravaganza will begin with track and field events. As a result, swimming has been pushed back to the second week.
And not to be dramatic, but we all know that Australia absolutely EATS the swimming events. So, with that push back, our solid start on the Olympic Games medal tally could be knocked back.
To that, I say boo boo, tomato tomato!

According to the new schedule, Day 15 is the one to keep your eyes on during LA28, as it will feature the most medal events, including 16 teams and 19 individual finals.
Reflecting on the schedule’s release, LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover said that it was “meticulously developed to ensure the world’s best athletes can compete in LA”.
“We are energised by today’s milestones and remain focused on the work ahead as the Road to 2028 continues,” Hoover shared, per ABC News.
While this has been the first look at the schedule, Olympic Games organisers have said that it could change with a “detailed breakdown” slated to be released later this year.
“When the world comes here for these Games, we will highlight every neighbourhood as we host a Games for all and work to ensure it leaves a monumental legacy,” Karen Bass, LA’s Mayor, said.
The schedule’s release comes after Paralympic swimmers slammed the LA28 organising committee after it was revealed that the Paralympic swimming events would be held in a separate venue to Olympic swimming.
