The Thailand Philharmonic Orhcestra will kick off its 14th Season with the "Resurrection" concert at Mahidol University's Prince Mahidol Hall, Salaya campus, on Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 4pm.
Conducting the orchestra in this opening concert will be chief conductor Alfonso Scarano, who will bring a rejuvenated spirit to Mahler's Resurrection Symphony, one of the great symphonic works in the repertory.
With its 90-minute span and immense orchestral and choral forces, including soloists, his second symphony ranks among the most colossal of all musical works. Written between 1888 and 1894, and first performed the following year, the work shows how the composer confronted mortality and rebirth and how he expressed his tender love of nature.
The piece also keeps challenging the audience to examine our humanity with the self-penned text: "With wings I won for myself, in love's ardent struggle, I shall fly upwards, to that light which no eye has seen."
Returning to render a pleasing voice alongside the orchestra on both shows will be two of the Kingdom's great vocal talents: soprano Pijarin Wiriyasakdakul and mezzo Sassaya Chavalit. They will be accompanied by the Mahidol University Choir under the tutelage of Rit Subsomboon.
Tickets cost 400, 600, 800, 1,000 and 1,500 baht (half-prices for students) and can be purchased from Thai Ticket Major (visit thaiticketmajor.com or call 02-262-3456) or by calling 02-849-6565/6 ext 6603/4 and 6624.
