BHOPAL: The death of Group Captain Varun Singh is not just a loss for his family, but for the entire country, Neeharika Naidu, aunt and family friend of Varun Singh, said after the warrior’s mortal remains were flown to Bhopal.
She is the wife of the former vice chief of Army staff, Lt General Milan Naidu.
Talking to TOI, Neeharika Naidu said, “He was a different kind of a boy. Very calm and composed. He was everyone’s blue-eyed boy among friends and family.”
“Even in his childhood, Varun loved to play the role of a military officer. You could see his passion for the defence forces from a very young age. He always put his best foot forward in life. I still cannot believe that he is no more with us,” she said.
Officers like Varun are examples for everyone, Naidu remarked. “His commitment towards his work and concern for the family was amazing. Varun was a darling to everyone. My son was also in the Air Force till last year and I can say that such officers are assets to the nation. Varun’s loss is not just the loss of a family but it is the loss of every Indian,” said Neeharika Naidu.
Moved by the courage of Group Captain Varun’s mother Uma Singh, Neeharika Naidu said, “She is a brave lady. This is not an easy time for us. Even in these difficult times, Uma has shown great courage. Every mother must be proud of her.”
Varun, one of the country’s best test and fighter pilots,was a Shaurya Chakra winner. He was given the gallantry medal for landing a malnfunctioning Tejas fighter jet. Sources close to his family say he planned to visit Indore in end-December to celebrate his Shaurya Chakra. Indore is the parental home of Varun’s wife Gitanjali.
