A look inside the stunning hidden Glasgow treasure a stone's throw from Queen Street Station

With the stunning architectural history that Glasgow has, it goes without saying that there are plenty of hidden gems tucked away inside buildings that we walk by every day.

Dazzling interiors such as that inside the St Vincent Street Church, The Britannia Panoptican, The Trades Hall of Glasgow and The Royal Faculty of Procurators Library on Nelson Mandela Place.

And now we can add another one to the list in the form of The Merchants House of Glasgow, the stunning hidden treasure located a stone's throw from Queen Street Station on West George Street.

Set in the very heart of the city centre, The Merchants House is steeped in history, as home to the charitable organisation which is one of Glasgow's most ancient and prestigious organisations.

Beautifully decorated and overflowing with character, its history goes back to the 16th century when wealthy merchants founded the House and began the charitable work that continues today.

The John Burnet designed building opened in 1874 as the home of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, and at its heart is the magnificent Grand Hall, the largest room within The Merchants House and one adorned with stained-glass windows and portraits of key past city figures.

There is also the elegant Lord Dean's Room, which features a floor-to-ceiling stained glass window depicting the scene in 1605 when the Letter of Guildry formalised the affairs of The Merchants House.

Other key features include the marble staircase, intimate powder room and the elegant Directors Room complete with chandeliers, white marble fireplace, gold wallpaper and period features.

The interior of The Merchants House, while remaining a secret to many of us who have never ventured inside, is popular for international conferences, small meetings and events, and is well known as a wedding venue.

Oh, and we forgot to mention the rooftop space, which offers unrivalled views over George Square and beyond - the proverbial cherry on top as it were.
