A look inside the brand new apartments in Newport's former Passport Office building

The latest housing development in Newport city centre is gearing up to welcome its first tenants by the by late spring, developers have announced.

Olympia House, once the site of Newport's passport office, has been transformed into a "modern apartment complex", housing association Newport City Homes has said.

The building, which was first constructed in the 1960s and is one of the tallest in the city, has undergone a complete regeneration after it received £1 million in Welsh Government funding.

It is now completely unrecognisable inside as a former block of offices, with Newport City Homes currently working in partnership with estate agent Peter Alan to have the apartments on the market in spring.

"Olympia House is one of the first purpose built modern apartment complexes to be completed within the city centre for some time," a statement from Newport City Homes said.

"Stylish bathrooms, fitted wardrobes and huge panoramic windows make these apartments perfectly suited to modern city life, and a welcome opportunity for first time buyers wanting to get onto the property ladder."

Accommodation in the development will be a mixture of one- and two-bedroom open-plan apartments, and developers hope the scheme will "meet the growing demand for housing in the city from first time buyers."

The apartments will be available to hopeful first-time buyers through both the Rent-to-Own Wales and Shared Ownership Wales schemes, while there will also be some available to rent.

Rent-to-Own Wales allows prospective homeowners to put part of their rent each month towards a deposit on a property. Shared Ownership, meanwhile, means that 50% of the property can be purchased initially, with the option to increase your share later on.

“We are so pleased and excited that we are able to offer the opportunity for the residents of Newport to start their home ownership with us through these exciting and imaginative purchase options," said Head of Development at Newport City Homes, Nigel Webb.

Land and new homes manager at Peter Alan, Michael Edwards said: “We are hugely excited that Newport City Homes are offering an affordable proposition to buyers in Newport.

"Rent to Own is an innovative way for people to start their climb on the property ladder and the Shared Ownership option will also help those who wish to own their own home."

Mr Edwards added: "We look forward to welcoming those who would like more information on how they can acquire a property at Olympia House and live in the centre of this aspiring city.”
