A look back at one of Belfast's most iconic stores - Cecil's pet shop on Gresham Street

Here we take a look back at one of Belfast's most iconic former shops - Cecil Creighton's pet shop on Gresham Street.

It's one of the many shops that were part of the fabric of Belfast by-gone days.

If you grew up in Belfast in the 1970s, you will fondly remember the fascinating pet shop when you were out and about in the Smithfield area.

Many Saturdays were spent admiring Cecil's animals, trying to persuade parents to buy the cute puppy in the window. Most of Belfast more than likely bought their pet goldfish from the Gresham Street shop down through the years.

Cecil was a well-known character in the city. Who remembers his monkey, Suzie? She was probably just as famous around Belfast as Cecil himself.

Word has it that she was a bit cheeky and loved to unwrap sweets. Suzie was often found sitting on a chair inside the shop, keeping warm and cosy by the fire.

Not only was Cecil renowned for his pet shop business, but he was also known for his talent in the boxing ring. During his fighting days in the Ulster Hall, he was given the nickname 'The Birdman', an ode to his beloved business.

As time flies by, it's important to look back at former Belfast days and the people who made up our city to keep their memory alive.
