When we launched the Hub in November, we talked about how we have always expected our students to go out into the community, understand what is going on around them and make their own contacts.
Through this project, we are looking to change the dynamics – and a number of groups and individuals have already come forward to talk to us about how we might work with them.
This week, we met with Leeds LINK to talk about how our students might help cover their work and make it more engaging to young people who use health and community services.
Yesterday, though, it was about a more individual approach with two of our students – Danny Wright and Jamie Gilham - talking in-depth to a homeowner about a complaint which dates back to 2008. It's a story which is going to take time to cover properly, particularly if we are going to make sure we investigate all the different aspects and do it justice. Watch this space for updates in the new year.
Lastly, we've been working on the programme of speakers for next year. So far, we've got three speakers lined up:
January 12 – Guardian northern editor, Martin Wainwright.
January 19 – Simon Rogers, who runs the Guardian Datablog.
January 26 – Information architect Martin Belam.
Further events will also be announced.
All the above events start at 1pm and any who wants to drop into the Hub either before or after the speakers is more than welcome.
Catherine O'Connor is the acting head of journalism and business at, Leeds Trinity University College.
