'A long time coming' - Liverpool fans react to new Anfield Road plan as new capacity debated

Liverpool fans are overjoyed after the club announced new plans to increase Anfield stadium capacity in excess of 60,000.

The faithful Reds support were outside the hallowed ground today and told the ECHO how happy they were at the latest announcement.

But some fans think that the Reds should aim even higher in their plans to increase the capacity.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Liverpool Football Club today reaffirms its intention to redevelop the Anfield Road stand with ambitious new plans now under active consideration."

Existing outline planning permission, which allows for the addition of around 4,000 seats to the stand, is due to expire next month.

And Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group will allow that to lapse and instead concentrate on alternative options with a view to submitting what the club regard an "ambitious new" planning application for a larger scheme in due course.

The Reds will now engage with the local community and other key stakeholders as they determine the detail of the new approach.
