With the Abel Tasman National Park and the famed Marlborough vineyards on its doorstep, Nelson is an often overlooked stop on New Zealand itineraries.
But for those in the know, it offers delicious food, pristine swimming spots and endless golden beaches.
Where to stay ...
A real Kiwi holiday is spent in a beachfront motorcamp, and Nelson happens to have claim to the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. Park up a campervan at Tahuna Beach Holiday Park (tahuna.nz) and enjoy morning and evening swims.
For something a little more luxe, head around the bay to Kaiteriteri and stay at Split Apple Retreat for wellness (splitapple.com).

Where to eat …
On weekends you’ll find Nelsonians brunching on grilled halloumi and poached eggs topped with pistachio-almond dukkah at DeVille (devillecafe.com), before heading to the eclectic Yaza! Cafe (yazacafe.co.nz) for lunch. Fish and chips on Tahunanui Beach is a must for dinner; the best are at The Sands Fish and Chip Shop over the road.
In the summer, head to Toad Hall (toadhallmotueka.co.nz) in Motueka for real fruit ice cream.
What to do …

An adventure lover’s haven, Nelson is surrounded by lakes, mountains and stunning walks. The Abel Tasman National Park never ceases to amaze with its golden beaches and azure waters.
The Nelson Lakes are a marvel, but the nearby rivers are where you will find locals swimming in the summer: the Aniseed Valley and Pelorus are popular, but you can always find a quiet spot.
