George Northwood is well known in the beauty industry not just for his superlative cuts and blowouts, but also his loyal clientele who have followed him tenaciously since he set out in hairdressing more than two decades ago.
Responsible for the much-mimicked styles of Alexa Chung and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley from the early days of their careers, Northwood’s customers include Rachel Weisz, Alicia Vikander and Julianne Moore, while he famously toured the globe with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and was responsible for Meghan’s wedding day hair. His signature ‘undone’ style delivers hair that is effortlessly glamorous and always modern, while his famous ‘invisible trims’ set even the most nervous salon visitors at ease.
Following in the footsteps of his popular Wells Street salon, Northwood has just announced the launch of a brand new space on Shoreditch’s Boundary Street, opening on 21 March. ‘I’m excited to be in the vibrant neighbourhood of Shoreditch,’ says Northwood. ‘I used to live here seven years ago and it’s changed enormously - there’s so much on offer here now. How - for example - can you say no to anything from Jolene Bakery or the independent pasta shop, Burro e Salvia? The Boundary brasserie opposite the salon serves the most delicious breakfast and lunch too, and for something special I always head to The Clove Club. You’ll regularly find me stocking up in Le Labo or Aesop around the corner on Redchurch Street and my acupuncturist friend, Ross Barr, practises here on Fridays at Shoreditch House.’
At the salon, a minimal, flawlessly designed space dotted with mid-century modern furniture and one-off pieces from Northwood’s favourite makers, clients will experience appointments with Northwood and his hand-picked team, while those who visit on launch day itself will enjoy an open house policy offering customers and the local community free haircuts all day long, on a first-come first-serve basis.
