A Level results for Sefton as pupils look forward to bright futures

Students across Sefton are celebrating following the release of this year's A-Level results - despite a drop in top grades.

The total number of students accepted on to UK degree courses has fallen. So far, 408,960 places have been taken up, which is down one per cent on the same point last year, initial UCAS figures show.

And just 25.5 per cent of A-level grades were A* or A, which is the lowest proportion since 2007.

But despite, centres across the borough have posted positive results.

And at Hugh Baird , we spoke to two students who received A* and A in their results today.

Amy Kelley celebrated an A* in English Literature, an A in Media and a Distinction* in BTEC Art and Design. These results now set Amy on her way to Edge Hill University to study for a degree in English Literature.

Jessica Lam will study Medicine at Hull York Medical School, having achieved two A* and an A in Biology, Chemistry and Psychology.

The college’s 99% A-level pass rate placed it above the benchmark for sixth form colleges nationally, and in 17 of the 19 A-level subjects offered at the College’s South Sefton Campus, a perfect 100% pass rate was secured.

47% of results were high grades (A* to B) and 75% of results being graded between A* and C, while an impressive 100% pass rate at BTEC was secured, with 72% of students achieving Distinction or Distinction*.

KGV in Southport are celebrating after another year of great results.

All 30 A Level and BTEC subjects A Level and BTEC secured 100% pass rates, with Sociology results among the best in the country - 91% of students received an A*-B grade.

There were more celebrations in Crosby , with St Mary's College receiving a 99 percent pass rate.

Staff at St. Mary’s say they have again recorded an excellent value-added performance, with many students exceeding their predicted grades, demonstrating once again the significant progress that pupils make at the school.

Adam Bennett from Aughton was top of the class at the college this year with an incredible four A* passes in Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Further Maths.

Adam is going to study Natural Sciences at Durham University, while Helen Fraser - who achieved A grades in Biology, Chemistry and Maths - is heading to Birmingham University to study Medicine.

And at Merchant Taylors, two thirds of all students recorded A* to B grades, including 22 girls and boys who achieved straight A or A*s.

Five students are now heading to Oxbridge, while Ruby Wu, who achieved an incredible three A* and two A grades is going to study Maths at the University of Warwick.

At Formby High School , 16 students achieved at least two A grades with five gaining A*s and As across the board.

The school says these results 'represent very solid achievement given the increased rigour of both A Level and BTEC courses'.

The vast majority of students have gained places on their preferred courses at university, with three securing places at Oxbridge.

And at Range High School, over half the grades awarded were A*-B; with an average BTEC grade of a Distinction.
