A-level and GCSE results in England will now be based on teachers’ assessments of their students, unless the grades produced by the controversial algorithm are higher, exams regulator Ofqual has announced.
The Government U-turn comes after days of mounting anger over the downgrading of thousands of A-level exam results, with ministers left scrambling to find a solution to the fiasco.
Earlier on Monday the Welsh Government announced that A-level and GCSE grades wil now be awarded based on teacher assessments, as will GCSE grades in Northern Ireland.
Despite the controversy over exam results in England, a Downing Street spokesman said Boris Johnson still had confidence in his Education Secretary Gavin Williamson.
