A-League: Jets in talks with two players in bid to add depth to squad

NEWCASTLE Jets are in talks with a midfielder and a striker who chief executive Lawrie McKinna said would help the club build momentum over the final third of the A-League season.

McKinna had hoped to unveil one of the new players on Tuesday.

"It is close but until they are actually signed they might not be here," McKinna said. "One is a striker and one is a midfielder. Both are free agents."

The prospective new additions follow the arrival of Roy O'Donovan and Connor O'Toole during the transfer window.

"We bought in Roy and Connor and it has given us a lift," McKinna said. "We have Roy buzzing about out there. A couple more new faces would help build momentum until the end of the season."

As well as the prospective signings, Wes Hoolahan is expected to make his long-awaited return in the next fortnight.

"A few new players and a couple coming back, it changes the dynamics of the squad," McKinna said. "Before, everybody who was fit was basically in the squad. Now it is different. People have to perform on the training park and the weekend or you will not be in the squad."

One of the recruits would be an injury replacement for Lachy Jackson (knee).
