A-League: In-form Jets keeper in line for contract extension

Lewis Italiano is set to be rewarded for his strong form with a contract extension.

The 29-year-old keeper is one of nine players, including on-loan duo Bobby Burns and Abdiel Arroyo and recent arrivals Bernie Ibini and Joe Ledley, off contract.

The West Australian has started in the past eight games and has been a key figure in the Jets' revival.

With Glen Moss to retire at the end of the season to take up a coaching role at new club Macarthur FC, the Jets are keen to lock in a keeper.

Talks are understood to be advanced. Promising shot-stopper Noah James, who is currently injured, is on a scholarship. Italiano's form in the final seven games is likely to determine whether the Jets look to sign another senior keeper. At the very least, they will want someone capable of pushing Italiano.

Italiano, who became a dad in the off-season, is in his second year at the Jets. He had been understudy to Moss until the former New Zealand international suffered a calf injury.

Italiano was pitched into the starting side against Sydney FC in round 14 and has stayed there. He spent 13 games in goal in the 2017-18 season for Wellington before joining the Jets.

Captain Nigel Boogaard and Irish midfielder Wes Hoolahan, who has recently returned from a five-month lay-off with an ankle injury, head the list of players whose deal is up at the end of the campaign.

However, new coach Carl Robinson is assessing the entire squad and has indicated he will move players on if they don't fit into his plans.

The Jets have recorded two draws and win since Robinson took the reins and are unbeaten in the past five.

They face a tough trip to Adelaide on Sunday against a Reds outfit stinging from a 5-1 thrashing to Western United at home.

The match is likely to be the debut of Jets' Welsh international Ledley.

Meanwhile, the Jets youth team made a promising start to their NPL 4 campaign on Sunday, edging out Prospect United 1-0 at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility.

Sam Donnellan scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot. At the other end, Jets keeper Brodie Volkiene saved a penalty.
