'A leading light' - Jamie Redknapp picks out Arsenal star for praise despite disappointing season

Bukayo Saka has been one of the few bright sparks for Arsenal through what has been one of their worst seasons in recent memory.

The Gunners lost their final shot of returning to the Champions League for the first time since the 2016-17 season with defeat to Villarreal in the UEFA Europa League semi-final.

This came after a poor Premier League campaign had ruled Arsenal out of contention for a top-four finish months ago.

However, according to Jamie Redknapp, there have been some 'leading lights' for the Gunners this season and none more so that Saka, a player Redknapp wants to see represent England in the summer's European Championships.

"I’m hoping he goes to the Euros with England," Redknapp told Sky Sports, before Arsenal's 1-0 win over Chelsea last week.

The former England international believes that the expansion of the England squad from 23 to 26 players is something that will help Saka secure his place in Gareth Soughtage's final selection

"He might have been one that was on Gareth’s maybe list but to give him that experience. What I like most about him is he’s fearless, he doesn’t care, he wants the ball.

"He’s been a leading light for Arsenal when you look at all the players they’ve got, all the experienced players, he’s the one when Arsenal win, it will be because he does something special in the game."

Saka is not the only Gunner's youngster Redknapp praised. The former Spurs captain claimed that were it not for the performances from Saka's fellow academy graduate Emile Smith Rowe and Scotland international Kieran Tierney Mikel Arteta could be facing more serious questions about his future as manager of the club.

"The young players, I genuinely believe, have kept him in this job to a certain extent," he said.

"They’ve been the shining light for the team. I don’t think it’s necessarily the greatest squad in the league but they should be doing a lot better.

"I think he’s been helped out by the young players, if he didn’t have Saka, Smith Rowe, Tierney has been excellent, apart from that I can’t see any players looking in the mirror and saying they did their bit this year.

"They’ve not been good enough and that brings pressure for the manager."
