A late offside call denied Christian Pulisic’s brilliant goal against Liverpool

While Christian Pulisic’s Premier League debut didn’t get off to the best start (a 4-0 loss at Manchester United), Wednesday was a different story for the 20-year-old American.

Pulisic made his first start in a meaningful match with Chelsea, going up against Champions League winners Liverpool in the UEFA SuperCup.

And it didn’t take long to see exactly why the Blues dished out $73 million for Pulisic.

In the 36th minute, Pulisic made an excellent pass to Olivier Giroud through four Liverpool defenders for the opening goal.

And five minutes later, Pulisic nearly sent American soccer fans into an absolute frenzy. After a nice run into the box, Pulisic took on two Liverpool defenders and found the back of the net for a fantastic goal. The problem: The goal was disallowed.

At the start of the sequence, which we couldn’t see in the live broadcast, Pulisic did appear to be in an offside position. With VAR, the assistant referee is instructed to let the play continue unless it’s an obvious call. So, that explained why the offside call came so late.

Still, it was an impressive first half for Pulisic against a Premier League rival.
