The Tokyo metropolitan government shut down the Tsukiji market in Chuo Ward, Tokyo, on Wednesday night.
The demolition work of the market has already begun. After the closing of the market on Oct. 10, market officials were allowed to enter it for work related to moving to the new market. However, Tokyo metropolitan government officials closed the makeshift doors at 8 p.m. Wednesday, prohibiting entry into the market except for demolition workers.
Since the market's closing, some businesses opposing its relocation had continued operations, and their supporters had gathered together. However, no confrontation occurred when the doors were closed.
