A jukebox playing songs about disease will feature in new Wellcome Collection exhibition

A jukebox of pop songs about epidemics will form part of a free and permanent exhibition opening at the Wellcome Collection exploring current global challenges — from climate change to infectious diseases.

The museum, located near Euston station, will replace its Medicine Now display, which has had more than two million visitors, with a yet-to-be-named exhibition.

Drawing on a mixture of expert health, science, art and medical input, it will be organised thematically.

Contemporary artworks and displays involving touch and smell will be incorporated in the new space which opens in September and is expected to remain in place for a decade.

Rosie Stanbury, head of public programmes at the Wellcome Collection, said: “In a society more siloed than ever, it’s vital that we inspire our audiences to think differently about health if we’re to make real change.

“We know that museums — particularly medical museums — can be alienating for under-represented groups. I hope this display will do the very opposite and set a precedent for a more inclusive approach.”
