A.J. Green talks future as he heads into critical contract year

The talk about A.J. Green’s contract isn’t going to stop.

After all, alongside Tyler Boyd, Green headlines a loaded Bengals 2020 free agent class. Until something gets done, it is the topic Green will find himself confronted with in media appearances.

The latest came during a sit-down with ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “I don’t know. I love the Bengals, I’d love to be a part of the organization for the rest of my career, but you never know,” Green said. “I just take each year at a time, and go out there and play and get healthy and go from there.”

Green made a point to say he couldn’t see himself leaving.

“It’s hard,” Green said. “This is a place I’ve been for the last eight years, going on nine years now. So it’s hard for me to see myself somewhere else because I have a family here. You just never know, like I said, I can’t control that. Something may get done something might not get done.”

This isn’t anything out of the ordinary for Green at this point. He’s been adamant he wants to stay with the Bengals and leaves the door open about something else on the chance an extension doesn’t get done.

But listening to Bengals owner Mike Brown, this is almost an afterthought — it’s going to get done. A big Julio Jones extension seems to be in the works, so like last time, Green’s will likely follow shortly thereafter.

The only thing working against this getting done is the fact Green has missed big chunks of time in two of the past three seasons. But he’s fully healthy again now, and it is hard to imagine Zac Taylor’s staff not wanting him around for the long term.

Green’s comments to Schefter will probably raise an eyebrow or two.  But Bengals fans know this is simply how he conducts himself in the media — as he says elsewhere in the interview, the Bengals don’t make their business public, so nobody will know about an agreement until it gets announced.
