A.J. Green doesn’t know when he’ll return to practice

Friday was a quiet day for the Cincinnati Bengals, meaning there wasn’t much in the way of A.J. Green news.

But there was some.

Lost in the noise of the final injury report going live and Cordy Glenn practicing but out because of a coach’s decision was a little nugget about Green from Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com:

Green was on the field in sweats and said after the workout he doesn’t know when he’ll return to practice …

We’ve tried to dive deep on what’s really going on with Green and his numerous quotes touched on his playing future and more.

But this is an interesting small development because much of Green’s chatter this week was about the long-term outlook. He’s thinking about the next five years, not just this season. He doesn’t want to risk himself, and reading between the lines, especially since he doesn’t have a new contract.

Usually, this would be about the time we’d hear Green plans to run some routes before the next game and really test the ankle again. After all, the issue this week was merely swelling, which impacted the range of motion.

Maybe Green runs some routes before Sunday’s game against Baltimore. Maybe not. But looming over the entire situation this week was the reality Green could always end up shutting it down for the year. That he doesn’t know when he’ll hit the practice field again is at least interesting, if nothing else.
