A huge swarm of bees descends on St Mary Street in Cardiff city centre

A huge swarm of bees has descended on a plant in Cardiff city centre.

An area of St Mary Street, outside Ty Madeira Restaurant, was cordoned off on Saturday afternoon because of the bees.

The warm weather means that masses of the insects are currently swarming on the plant.

Many shoppers were shocked by the huge numbers of bees buzzing around the plant but others stopped to take photos of the swarm.

Are swarming bees dangerous?

If you see a swarm of bees it can be quite alarming, but it is the process of bees looking for a new home.

After a long, cold winter, a bee colony will begin to swell in numbers as the weather gets warmer.

The British Beekeepers Association advise that the bee colony’s priority is “to find a safe place to set up their new colony” and won’t be interested in you.

However they warn that you “should still act with caution as they are a wild insect.”
