A huge outdoor nightclub is opening in Manchester city centre

A huge new open-air nightclub will open in Manchester city centre this summer.

Square One will take shape in an old car park just off the ring road near Manchester Piccadilly station.

The new event space will welcome national and international DJs in a programme of weekly events throughout the summer months.

It says it will be 'a beacon of light in the return to clubbing', with parties running from mid-afternoon until 11pm.

The nightclub and live music industry have been among the hardest-hit by the coronavirus pandemic, with venues shut for a year this week.

Based on the Government's roadmap out of lockdown, it will also be one of the last sectors to reopen.

Nightclubs won't be permitted to open again until June 21 at the earliest, when England is expected to reach step four of the roadmap and all social distancing laws are hoped to be relaxed.

If restrictions allow, Square One will open on June 26, with Denis Sulta, Enzo Siragusa and Hot Since 82 playing at the launch party.

Other events set to take place here this summer will include parties from Zutekh, Jika Jika, Animal Crossing and Amsterdam based label PIV debuting their first ever showcase in Manchester.

Square One will be located in a car park on Cakebread Street, a short distance from Freight Island at Depot Mayfield, the huge outdoor food and drink destination that was built with social distancing in mind last summer.

It's not the first time Mancs have been known to party in a car park, with the Warehouse Project's former 'spiritual home' a car park space on Store Street.

The venue bosses said in a statement: "Manchester is our home. This one is for the dancers, a new venue with no-nonsense.

"Let's make up for the lost memories and come together, a good and proper open-air affair.

"Summer is coming and the dance floor is ready."
