A holiday home in Portugal

Resort Resales Algarve
Buyer numbers along the Algarve are 40% down this year because of the problems foreigners are having obtaining mortgages, and because of concerns about prices. This three-bed villa with a pool is 10km from Lagos and 2km from the beach. Originally €530,000 (£460,000), it is down 20% to €420,000 (£364,000), including furniture.

Inland between Lisbon and Porto is easily the cheapest location to buy in Portugal – but you can be a long way from the coast, with few opportunities for holiday letting. Higher up the scale is this five-bed farmhouse plus adjoining water mill in 5,000 sq m of land just outside Anadia, 5km from the spa town of Luso. It is priced at €120,000 (£104,000) but serious renovation is required.

The historic university town of Coimbra is at the heart of the region between Lisbon and Porto, surrounded by rolling hills and fortified villages. This disused corn mill, 10 minutes from Bucaco, went on the market for £24,000 this week and has already attracted interest. It is 110 sq m and sits in 1,000 sq m of land.

Porto is arguably Portugal’s most beautiful region, with fishing ports turned into low-rise resorts and, just inland, some unspoilt villages and hill communities. This modern three-bedroom, two-bathroom villa with a private pool and parking, is in a complex within easy reach of the motorway. It is furnished throughout and on the market at €325,000 (£282,000).

Far fewer Britons buy in Lisbon than on the Algarve. This 18th-century apartment is in Lisbon’s Se district with original tiles and what the selling agent calls “neo-Pompeiian frescoes”. Its price has been cut to €330,000 (£286,000).
