A historic Welsh quarry has been rebranded with an English name and the move has caused anger

People living near a popular Welsh tourist attraction have been left fuming after it was rebranded.

Llechwedd Slate Caverns has dumped the name it has been known as since 1836.

Owners of the slate quarry turned adventure attraction in Blaenau Ffestiniog recently renamed it Slate Mountain/Mynydd Llechi.

The move followed a £1.65m investment into its glamping lodges as well as a new four-star hotel at the site.

The name dates back to when the quarry was one of world's biggest producers of slate.

Today, the site is the home to numerous adventure and heritage tours such as the Llechwedd Deep Mine Tour, Zip World Caverns, Bounce Below and Antur Stiniog.

But many in the area have opposed the rebranding that has dropped Llechwedd from its name, describing it "appalling" and "disrespectful" on social media.

They have called for a public meeting to be held to discuss the matter.

Ieuan Evans, originally from Penrhyndeudraeth, has family members that worked in the slate industry and opposes the name change.

He said: “The simple answer is that Llechwedd is its original name.

"In the past, quarrymen were mostly Welsh speakers that strived to make the slate industry a success and without their efforts, Llechwedd would not have existed.

“So to respect them, we should keep the name.”

Mr Evans has also contacted his local Assembly Members in Flint, believing that the erosion of Welsh historical names - particularly in the tourism industry - is a matter of concern throughout North Wales as well as in Blaenau Ffestiniog.

He said: “Historical names have been changed over the years without a second’s notice of the Welsh community’s feelings.”

Bodwydd and Rhiw councillor Annwen Daniels has become involved after being contacted by concerned residents over the matter.

She said: “There has been a lot of recent developments in regards to the renaming of Llechwedd.

“I have been in discussion with the business and have had a lot of meetings with them.

"Things are developing well."

Ieuan Evans added that he “can only hope” the enterprise will add the Welsh historical name back on the  business’ brand following the recent backlash.

A spokesperson for Slate Mountain revealed that the business expects to make an announcement on various items addressing individuals’ concerns in the next coming weeks.
