A guide to Earagail Arts Festival's 'hybrid' programme

The long-awaited return of the Earagail Arts Festival this month has been met by huge demand for tickets for its physical and online events.

While many of Donegal’s premier events have already sold out, a number of highlights are still available.

On Saturday July 24, the festival will be hosting an epic outdoor concert in the grounds of Fanad Lighthouse.

(Socially) Distanced Perspectives, co-curated by one of Ireland’s leading selectors, Cian Ó Cíobháin, brings together three distinct contemporary Irish acts from the edges of the nation to the edge of Ireland’s most northerly county.

From hip-hop, to electronic, to folk, this limited capacity outdoor show takes place in the grounds of the iconic Fanad Lighthouse. Country and traditional folk rub shoulders, making for a juxtaposition of musical threads, with added instrumentation from five musicians to provide larger dynamics.

If you are not able to travel that day, the festival is offering a very special online premiere at 8pm as part of its hybrid programme for 2021.

'Before' is a new play with music starring renowned Irish actor Pat Kinevane, set in Clery’s of Dublin, on the very day this iconic department store shuts – for good.

Filmed at Amharclann Ghaoth Dobhair, Fishamble is delighted to work with Earagail Arts Festival on the premiere of a new bilingual version of Before developed in conjunction with Donegal artist Eoghan Mac Giolla Bhrighde that weaves Irish and English together. Tickets for this show are available on the festival website.

Earagail Arts Festival also boasts a wide range of free events, both in-person and online, from exhibitions to concerts.

On Sunday July 11 at 3pm Brokentalkers Theatre Company presents Uprooted: Who owns the Story - The Collaborative Creative Process via YouTube. For this In Conversation – Docu style event, we bring together some of the creative team behind the collaborative theatre and film project, Uprooted.

On Monday, July 19 at 8pm The Balor Arts Centre, Ballybofey presents The Ghostlight Sessions – Inside The Song. For this special Earagail Arts Festival recording host Dean Maywood is joined by four of Ireland’s top songwriting talents – Joshua Burnside, Ultan Conlon, Ciaran Lavery and Laura Quirke.

The foursome not only shares their songs, but also chat in-depth with each other, sharing the highs, lows, inspiration and experience of the songwriting process. Don’t miss this mixture of wonderful music and fascinating, revealing discussion.

Four venues across the Donegal, Artlink Fort Drunree, An Gailearaí Ghaoth Dobhair, Glebe House & Gallery Churchill and Regional Cultural Centre Letterkenny will take you on a visual art ‘journey'.

This will traverse through the county’s cultural landscape via a multi-venue exhibition featuring Irish based artists exploring the societal shifts that shape our collective identity. Turas will run from June to September 2021 as part of the national ‘Colmcille 1500’ celebrations.

The beautiful drive and destination is reason enough to visit Fanad Head and Fanad Lighthouse, but the festival is also offering a Virginia Woolf-inspired self-guided tour from Tuesday July 20 to Sunday July 25.

The Lighthouse Project takes people on a self-guided journey, linking place with writing in an intimate and innovative way. Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse and the theme of personal journey, you are invited to explore this geographical area and the insight it offers.
